The only downside of Etsy is that its recommendation engine isn't all that great, so the results you see at first are OK, but won't necessarily be the absolute best suited for what you're seeking.

Regardless of the reason behind the relatively poor performance of their search listings, to solve the problem, here are some tips and tricks for how to discover all the coolest items that you're really looking for.
These Etsy shopping hacks work on the mobile app, mobile browser, and on your desktop browser. So it doesn't matter what device you're using, these strategies will ensure you uncover the best items.
If you see an item in your Etsy results that is similar but not quite what you're looking for, do this
Suppose you have a list of Etsy results, and you glance over at something that looks close to what you want but not quite the right style, color or dimensions. Don't scroll past it!
Instead, click on that item, then click on the store name of that Etsy shop. There it will list all the other items made by the same artisan. It's likely that this artisan might have other items crafted in a different color, style or dimensions that you prefer more.
Shopping for a physical item but getting frustrated with too many digital items in the search results?
You can filter your results for physical items only. Once your have your search results, go to the filters (symbol with small lines and circles, located just above the search results). Then in the filter settings, scroll down to "Item format" and choose "Physical items".
Conversely, if you're searching for digital items only, you can choose "Digital downloads" in the filter instead.
If you are shopping for an overseas recipient, do these things
If you live in one country and you're buying a gift for a friend or relative who lives in another country, Etsy is the perfect solution. It's much better than trying to shop online from a department store in that country, because many department stores won't accept a credit card with a different country of billing address than where you're shipping to. Etsy solves this problem perfectly - it's 100% fine with your credit card address being in a different country than where you're shipping to. That said, the search results you first get from Etsy will only be relevant to your country, not to the recipient's. To ensure that you're only looking at items which can be shipped directly to your recipient's country, do these things:
- When you have your Etsy search results on the page, go to "All Filters". This has a symbol with some lines and circles, and it's located towards at the top of the search results. Click or tap on that, then under "shop location", go to "custom" and start typing the country where you want to ship to, then select that country and go to "Show results".
- Again on "All Filters", scroll down and under "Ship to", use the selector to choose that same country to ship to.
Setting both these filters ensures that you're only getting Etsy shops that are located in the same country as the recipient and which are able to ship there. This way, shipping is fast (since it's domestic not international) and it's cheap, for the same reason.
If the shipping time is not a problem or you'd like to expand your search more (for example you don't get many search results when setting filters to that country), you could drop the first filter. In that case, in the filters go to "shop location" and set it to "Anywhere". However, the downside of this is that shipping could be more expensive, since the store could be anywhere in the world - it just is able to ship internationally to your target country.
Please understand that every time you do a new Etsy search that you want to ship overseas for (even in the same session of browsing), you'll have to set the filters again. It doesn't often remember your shop location and shipping preferences from one search to another.
Make use of your Etsy address book to remember shipping addresses
If you think you'll buy a gift at Etsy for the same person more on more than one occasion, enter their address in your Etsy address book. You can do this at any time, it doesn't have to be when you're making a transaction. Your Etsy address book allows you to enter the recipient's address ahead of time and select it any time later when at checkout. It saves the stress of accidentally making a typo when typing in an unfamiliar address in a rush at checkout.
To access your Etsy address book, log into your Etsy account, then go to "Your account" by clicking or tapping on the symbol with the person's face. Then go to "Account settings" and then choose "Addresses". Your default address shown will be your own address, and you should always keep that as default. But in addition, you're able to add other addresses (e.g. friends and family who you might shop for later). To do that, simply click on "Add a new address" and then enter the address details there. The addresses are allowed to be international, they don't have to be in the same country as your address.

One of Etsy's big strengths is the many artisans which offer personalized items. This means you have the ability to order the item with recipient's name, initials, or something similar on it. One hidden trick when shopping for Etsy personalized gifts is to set the "personalizable" filter.
