What to dip in cheese fondue

Fondue pot on stove

If you are making a fondue, you may be wondering what to have as cheese fondue dipping items. The good news is that the answer is extremely simple: white French baguette cut into approximately 1/2 inch cubes.

There are other things you can have on the side with your cheese fondue, and these will be listed below. But the only acceptable thing to dip into it is bread. This is because anything that is dipped in will slightly contribute to the flavor of the fondue, which you generally don't want. The taste of the fondue should be centered completely around the cheese.

In European countries where cheese fondue is eaten, it would appear as a breach of etiquette to dip anything else in other than cubed French baguette. This is different to chocolate fondue or meat fondue where a range of different things may be dipped. But in cheese fondue, only bread is acceptable - and even then, only cubed French baguette because that way there is a piece of crust on each cube of bread. The crust helps the bread stay on the fondue fork and not fall into the cheese fondue.

However, it is acceptable to have side items along with your cheese fondue, but these must be eaten as is and never dipped into the fondue. Since cheese fondue is quite rich and fatty, you generally want the side items to be healthy, light and not too fatty or sugary. Aside from general health concerns, this makes it easier on the stomach.

Side items to have with cheese fondue

Side items are placed together on a separate platter with forks or serving utensils and people serve themselves. You may prefer to divide the items equally between 2 serving plates. Why? Because you want everyone to be able to reach it. With the fondue pot occupying the center of the table (and it's not a reach-past item!) you'll want 2 plates of side items, one on each side of the fondue pot.

Keep it simple: pick about 3 - 4 different items from the list below for your fondue dinner. You don't need every conceivable option.

  • Pickles
  • Bell pepper slices
  • Cucumber slices
  • Tomato slices
  • Roasted mushrooms
  • Cauliflower florets
  • Baby carrots
  • Broccoli florets
  • Celery
  • Boiled tiny whole potatoes

When to eat cheese fondue

You can eat cheese fondue at any time of year. That said, it's better suited to winter or cooler months. If you were to eat it in summer, you would probably find yourself sweating a bit - the heat of the fondue pot itself adds to the heat in the room. Rest assured it's not unheard of to eat it in summer in Europe. For example, it's often eaten on Swiss National Day in Switzerland, which is on August the 1st each year and therefore in hot weather.

Enjoy your fondue!
