When you look at your progress in your current league on Duolingo, you'll notice that some people have a little status icon (kind of like an emoji) shown next to their profile picture, as you can see in the image above. But how do you change this icon or remove it completely? It's easy to do, but it's not at all intuitive.
Here is the illustrated tutorial for how to change your status mini-icon in Duolingo. This method works for both Android and iPhone at the time of writing.
1. First go to your league on the Duolingo app
That's right - do NOT go to your profile, instead you do this from inside your league. As a reminder how to get there, simply tap on the shield icon at the bottom of the screen (shown circled below) and you'll be in the right area. Your screen should look something like this now:
2. Long press on your picture
At this point, do a long press on your photo in your league. Don't just tap it briefly, hold your finger on it and another screen will come up.
After the long press, the status emoji options will come up. Your screen should now look like this:
3. Select your desired status emoji icon
Now you can select any of these icons that came up as your new status. It will replace whatever icon you had before. If you want your profile to have no emoji icon, simply tap on "Clear status".
Before selecting your new icon...
Understand that a few of these icons cost gems to use - if that is the case for the icon you picked, it will say when you tap on it. Most of the icons are free though. If you pick one that costs gems, it's not a whole lot of gems, but it's still something to be aware of, especially if you're trying to save up your gems for something else.
Why is this done in the league section and not in the profile section?
I don't know why this can't be done in the profile section instead. It would make more sense to place the emoji selection in the profile editing area. For whatever reason, Duolingo decided to do it from within your league's leaderboard.
